Think with me for a moment about what the scene must have been like that first Easter morning..
The disciples are gathered together, mourning the loss of their teacher, their master, their friend. For over three years, they witnessed miracles and healing not seen before. The crowds flocked to see and hear the Messiah.
But then, the crowd turned on Him. The Pharisees charged Him with blasphemy, and Pilate had him sentenced and flogged. The soldiers led Him to Golgotha--"the place of the skull". It was there that Jesus was crucified on a cruel cross and buried in a tomb. The stone was rolled in front of the grave, and Roman guards stood watch over the sealed sepulchre.
Sunday morning was abruptly interrupted by the news from women who went to the tomb. They ran to the disciples to inform them that the body of the Lord had been removed. It was gone. Peter and John hurried from the chaotic scene and ran to see for themselves what had been reported. John got there first, but it was Peter who went in...past the rolled -away stone...and found only the grave clothes. Jesus was not there. It was not until later that the risen Christ would appear to the disciples.
The Resurrection of Jesus is foundational to our faith. The Risen Savior gives us a certain hope beyond the grave. Come this Easter to celebrate with us......HE IS RISEN, HE IS RISEN INDEED!
The tomb is empty...the church should be full.
